Moving to British Columbia comes with a long list of tasks. One that is easy to miss: provincial health coverage does not start the day you arrive.
The MSP wait period
The Medical Services Plan (MSP) covers medically necessary doctor and hospital services for eligible BC residents. For most new residents, there is a wait period made up of the rest of the month in which you establish residence, plus two months. In practice, that means coverage may start about three months after you arrive. Apply as soon as you can, because the wait does not begin to shorten until you are eligible and enrolled.
Why the gap matters
Without coverage, a hospital visit, emergency surgery, or even a few days in hospital can cost thousands of dollars, billed directly to you.
How to protect yourself during the wait
- Private visitor or newcomer medical insurance: designed to cover emergency medical costs until MSP begins. It is best purchased before you arrive or right after.
- Check existing coverage: some employers, schools, or previous plans may cover you temporarily. Confirm the details in writing.
What MSP does not cover, even after it starts
MSP does not cover most prescription drugs, dental care, vision care, or paramedical services like physiotherapy or massage. An individual health and dental plan, or group benefits through your employer, can fill those gaps.
A simple checklist
- Apply for MSP as soon as you arrive.
- Buy private emergency medical coverage for the wait period.
- Once MSP begins, review whether you need extended health and dental coverage.
- Look at disability and critical illness coverage, especially if you are self-employed.
